Essex duo Jack Pike and Jake Hicks return to Soulvent Records with Keeping Secrets, following August’s Messy. Landing on 25 September, the single stays on the liquid side of Hillsdom’s sound while giving the drums and bass plenty of room to move.
A low-cut two-step rhythm opens the track, with a bell-like arpeggio ringing above it and indistinct vocal chops moving around the edges. Pianos and pads sit further back in the mix, allowing the arrangement to build gradually before the vocal begins to come into focus.
The drop brings in a solid break and a sharper groove, picked out by a shaker running through the drums. The female vocal now takes centre stage over a warm Reese bass, while short mid-bass stabs add extra movement underneath without crowding the mix.
The breakdown makes excellent use of silence, letting the track fall away before gradually layering in elements from the opening. It is a short reset, but an effective one, setting up a quick return to an expanded version of the drop with more width and movement in its final section.
