R3IDY’s route to a solo release on Soulvent Records began with a collaboration. Jakob Reid caught the label’s attention through Enamour, his 2025 track with Teej and Visionobi. Soulvent says that production prompted them to pursue a solo release, resulting in the three-track Clones EP. Released on 11 September 2026, Insubordinate offers a first taste of that project.
It’s an understated entrance. Breathy, string-like pads establish the atmosphere before scattered hi-hat and ride strikes begin picking out a rhythm. A water-drop effect punctuates the gaps, giving the opening a sense of space without leaving it feeling empty. When the vocal arrives, echo and delay stretch it across the track, opening everything out before the drop.
The drums land with a snap, joined by a whomping bass that stabs in and out rather than filling every available gap. There’s a satisfying interruption to those phrases: each retreat lets the drums register before the next bass hit cuts across them. Underneath, a repeating sub-bass supplies the consistent foundation that holds the groove together.
That use of space is what makes Insubordinate work. The sparse percussion and trailing vocal in the introduction prepare the ear for a drop whose appeal comes as much from the gaps as the impact. R3IDY gives the bass enough presence to lead, while leaving the snappy drum work clearly audible around it.
