Aphrodite is Gavin King, a producer and DJ whose stripped-back bass and beats helped shape jump-up drum and bass. His stage name grew out of acid-house parties he organised before following the music’s progression through hardcore and jungle. The records retained a direct relationship with rave culture, using recognisable vocal fragments and rhythmic hooks alongside the bassline.
With Micky Finn and Claudio Giussani, he formed Urban Shakedown, the project behind Some Justice. Aphrodite Recordings became an outlet for his own music, while Urban Takeover developed through his partnership with Finn. Those connected names trace different parts of the same history, rather than representing unrelated artists or labels.
His solo catalogue includes King Of The Beats, Style from the Darkside, and Stalker. The last reached another audience through the record-shop scene in the film Human Traffic. Hip-hop and reggae samples are recurring ingredients in the music, but the appeal lies in how they are rearranged around the drums and bass rather than simply in recognising their source.
The self-titled Aphrodite album and Aftershock offer longer introductions to his recording work. Alongside them, his collaborations with Finn include Bad Ass and Arsonist. Taken together, the records show why his name became closely associated with jump-up: clear rhythmic ideas, room for the bassline, and hooks that can communicate quickly without requiring a dense arrangement.
