B-complex

B-complex is the electronic music project of Matia Lenicka, a producer and DJ from Bratislava, Slovakia. Beautiful Lies brought her music to a wider audience through Hospital Records and its 2009 Sick Music compilation. Its lasting reach has made it a familiar starting point, but she has consistently resisted turning one successful track into a formula for everything that follows.

Speaking to UKF in 2022, she described Beautiful Lies as music made during a difficult breakup, with the frustration and emotion becoming part of the track. The Salad Is Ok EP took a different direction, while Past Lessons For The Future used a sample of actor Jan Werich to carry a message about peace and responsibility. The contrast reflects her preference for giving individual recordings their own character.

Her work has also extended into the way drum and bass is presented on stage. The Dramababes project brought dancers from burlesque, vogue, and circus backgrounds into her performances, creating another connection between the DJ and the audience. In the same interview, she spoke openly about being trans and bi-gender and about the importance of building welcoming spaces within rave culture.

A 2023 Beautiful Lies release revisited the original alongside her own edit and remixes by Rameses B and Mandidextrous. Her independently released Don’t Give Up EP also returned to older material that year, bringing together four tracks she associated with difficult periods in her life. Rather than a simple run of follow-ups to one anthem, the catalogue offers different expressions of the emotional impulse behind her production.
