Blacklab are brothers Kashim and Kariem, a drum and bass production duo formed in Las Vegas in 2013. Their musical background predates the project: both played in concert ensembles and competitive marching bands, an experience they have linked to their approach to arrangement, rehearsal, and performance.
Their debut Encounters EP appeared through You So Fat Records. Later work brought them to Soulvent, including Making Magic and the four-track Violet EP in 2020. Their catalogue includes both darker, sound-design-focused material and liquid drum and bass.
For the 2017 tracks Future and Hold Me Close, they deliberately explored more melodic writing. Kashim described using piano, strings, horns, and guitar to give Hold Me Close an ensemble feel, connecting studio work back to their band experience. They also helped establish the Database Collective with Consouls, creating a network intended to support and increase exposure for other US drum and bass producers.
