Behind the music
About Digital.
Digital is Steve Carr, the drum and bass producer and DJ from Ipswich whose musical background began with reggae sound systems. His work carries that interest in bass and space into jungle, alongside the label he runs, Function Records.
As a child, Carr learned about sound systems through his father, and later worked as a reggae selector before moving into rave music. In a Red Bull Music Academy lecture, he described sampling and production as extensions of that hands-on musical education.
His own catalogue includes Synthesis from 2016 and Total Control from 2018. The second of those albums placed more emphasis on his own material while retaining several collaborations, including work with Spirit, his partner in Phantom Audio.
Function gives Carr an outlet both for his own music and for other producers. The label also revisits older recordings, including a 2026 reissue of his 1996 material. Alongside those releases, his background as a selector remains part of his approach to making music: the relationship between bass, drums, and the sound system predates his studio career.
