Behind the music

About DJ Fresh.

DJ Fresh is British electronic producer Dan Stein. His career connects the underground drum and bass of Bad Company UK with a solo catalogue that also includes dubstep and vocal pop music. Those different contexts are part of the same producer's work, rather than separate artists using the name. In 2011, he described his remixes as a space to develop a future-jungle sound while his solo songs pursued a different direction.

Alongside his involvement in Bad Company UK's label, Stein co-founded Breakbeat Kaos with Adam F. His solo albums include Escape From Planet Monday in 2006, Kryptonite in 2010, and Nextlevelism in 2012. The latter period brought the Sian Evans collaboration Louder and the Rita Ora-fronted Hot Right Now, placing his production in a more explicitly song-led setting.

In a 2012 interview with Interview magazine, Stein described both the possibilities of making electronic music alone and the demands of helping other artists through label work. The account gives useful context to his movement towards a larger solo project: developing a label and developing his own records competed for time. His pop collaborations did not begin from an absence of underground experience; they followed years spent producing and helping build platforms for drum and bass. Visitors can trace that path through the Bad Company UK recordings, the earlier solo albums, and the later vocal singles.
