Behind the music

About DLR.

DLR is a drum and bass producer and DJ closely connected with Bristol and the founder of Sofa Sound. His approach concentrates on the interaction between drums and bass, using a small number of musical elements to develop a track's groove.

Born in Swindon, he spent formative years around the South West before moving to Leeds for university. There he worked with Octane and became involved in running club nights and a sound system, before later returning to Bristol.

The 2023 album Money Till I Got None appeared through his separate imprint, Money Records. He created that outlet for a personal project while Sofa Sound had grown into a platform for a wider circle of producers. The album's subject was the place of money in music and society, rather than an uncomplicated celebration of it.

DLR has described separating sound design from writing: first developing drums, loops, and textures, then returning to them when they suggest a track. The album grew gradually from that process. Sofa Sound meanwhile continues to publish collaborations and new producers, alongside his own music, including releases in its Sofa Singles Club series.
