Greg Packer is a Perth producer and DJ whose drum and bass career came before the disco and soul edits that made him known as Dr Packer. His earlier records include work for Good Looking Records and his own Interphase label, with liquid drum and bass an established part of that catalogue.
His enthusiasm for records started young: he bought Grandmaster Flash’s The Message in 1982, before his family moved to Australia. He began DJing in 1989 and won the West Australian DMC competition in 1991, defending the title the following year. That technical foundation sat alongside a growing interest in longer club mixes.
A UK visit in 1994 brought him into contact with jungle, which he took back to Perth. Production followed, with a studio established in 1998 and Interphase providing an outlet for his own music. His later account of those years connects the records to a scene he helped build far from the UK.
In 2013 he stepped away from drum and bass and began developing Dr Packer. Playing older funk and disco records at a beach bar helped spark that change. The two names mark different chapters, with the Greg Packer recordings preserving his earlier jungle and liquid work.
