Gremlinz is a respected figure in the drum and bass underground, known for his dark, cinematic productions and uncompromising approach to sound. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, he has carved out a distinctive niche with music that draws heavily from the rugged textures of mid-90s jungle and the stripped-back tension of early Metalheadz. His style is raw, percussive, and steeped in atmosphere, often blurring the line between minimalism and aggression.
Since the early 2000s, Gremlinz has built a formidable discography with releases on labels such as Metalheadz, Paradox Music, Architecture, and his own UVB-76 imprint. Tracks like After Dark and Empty Promises highlight his ability to create tension through intricate breakbeat manipulation, sparse sound design, and immersive sonic detail. His work is often associated with the deeper, more cerebral end of the drum and bass spectrum, and he’s gained a loyal following among listeners seeking substance over spectacle.
A long-time affiliate of Metalheadz, Gremlinz has contributed significantly to the label’s modern catalogue, both as a solo artist and in collaborations with Jesta, Ink, and Homemade Weapons. His partnership with the latter in particular has been praised for pushing the boundaries of halftime and experimental d&b, helping to define a darker, more industrial aesthetic within the genre.
With his dedication to preserving the essence of classic jungle while simultaneously evolving the form, Gremlinz has become one of the most influential artists in contemporary drum and bass. His music continues to inspire a new wave of producers intent on exploring the deeper, grittier side of the sound.
