Behind the music

About Ivy Lab.

Ivy Lab is the partnership of Sabre and Stray, known for taking drum and bass into the wider world of beat music. Liquid remains part of the catalogue, but the project’s later albums give downtempo rhythms, hip-hop, and visual storytelling much more of the spotlight.

The Infinite Falling Ground albums show how far that approach developed. The second instalment, released in 2024, paired 14 tracks with a film by Lake Hills. Its story continued the characters from the first project, while Sabre’s own reflections on fatherhood helped shape the music and its emotional direction.

That expansion did not mean a clean break with drum and bass. Idols Fall / Snap 101 returned to Critical Music in 2023, with the label explicitly presenting the release as liquid. Earlier work with Alix Perez had already brought soulful drum and bass and halftime together, rather than treating them as competing identities.

Ivy Lab announced that 2026 would be their final year as a project, with farewell shows and final releases before Sabre and Stray pursue new work. Twenty Twenty London is continuing. For listeners finding the catalogue now, the different tempos are part of the same history: a project that gradually made more space for the music its members wanted to write.
