Klax began with friendships formed around music in Brighton. Joel met Ben through a record shop, while Ben was already DJing with Benny. Their different interests, including dubstep and drum and bass, eventually came together in a three-producer project.
An early release, Vendetta, appeared on Renegade Hardware, before Blackball introduced them to Critical Music’s Binary series. The latter became an important point in their development, with a bass-led, rolling sound that gave the group a clear identity.
Their 2016 Systems 003 EP continued that relationship with Critical. It includes The Level with MC ID, Ritalin, and Hotline, alongside Foreign Concept’s remix of Blackball. The record brings several rhythmic ideas together while keeping the weight and detail of their early productions.
Klax have described a working routine in which ideas begin separately, then develop during regular sessions together. Making their own samples helps give those sessions a common starting point. That combination of independent experiments and collective decisions is central to the project, with each member contributing something the others might not have arrived at alone.
