Macca’s partnership with Loz Contreras began at a night in Newcastle, where the two found they had more in common than the people determined to keep partying. Both wanted to go to bed. They also heard how Loz’s sample ideas and Macca’s production could work together, and the musical conversation continued afterwards.
Their Better World album arrived through Fokuz Recordings in 2017, bringing that shared interest in soulful drum and bass into a larger project. The collaboration developed through swapping ideas rather than insisting on being in the same room for every stage of a track.
Lost Origins followed on Spearhead Records in 2018. Macca described Don’t Give Up and I Need You as closer to their established Amen-roller style, while You Want Me You Need Me explored a deeper feel. The title track, featuring Becca Jane Grey, took another direction again.
That range is useful when discovering his work. Liquid is a substantial part of the catalogue, but the records with Loz also leave room for rolling breaks and darker moods. They have spoken about keeping the familiar parts of their sound while improving the production, making development a matter of detail as well as new ideas.
