Neonlight are the German drum and bass partnership of Tobi and Jay, whose music combines detailed bass design with an interest in stories and larger album concepts. Their work has appeared through Blackout Music NL, alongside releases for other labels and their own Diascope project.
My Galactic Tale, released in 2016, gave their production a science-fiction setting. The record’s wider presentation helped establish an approach in which artwork and imagined worlds supported the music, rather than simply decorating a collection of club tracks.
Their second album, Vanity Fair, arrived in 2022 with a different subject. Discussing it with UKF, the pair described characters and social behaviour as part of its underlying concept. Tracks such as Scarface and Corset sit within that world, while the production retains the intensity associated with their neurofunk work. They also described mixing neuro and jump-up on Kinski, Bullhead, and Mammon, giving those album tracks their own rhythmic character.
The duo format is central to the process. In their interviews and artist-hosted question-and-answer session, they discussed learning production over time, working with different influences, and writing music for settings such as Let It Roll’s opening show. That combination of studio detail and ambitious presentation offers listeners more than a sequence of isolated bass-heavy singles.
