Sinistarr is Jeremy Howard, a producer and DJ whose music grew out of Detroit’s drum and bass scene. His early releases appeared on labels including Metalheadz, Hospital Records, and Renegade Hardware, but his subsequent work has moved across footwork, jungle, and techno.
Detroit’s radio culture helped shape that range. Howard has recalled hearing house and ghettotech mixes while growing up, then finding drum and bass through films, compilation CDs, and a job at his high-school radio station. Digging through the station’s records and promos gave him access to music beyond the city’s better-known electronic traditions.
Later releases for Exit Records, Hooversound, Defrostatica, and Unchained reflect that broader approach. In 2018, a connection through Joe Nice led to a tour of mainland China and music for the newly launched Unchained label, linking his studio work with a new audience overseas.
