Sonic is Jasper Byrne, whose musical life stretches from jungle records to the uneasy worlds of his video games. A saxophonist before he became a producer, he started exploring live drum and bass while studying in Manchester, bringing jazz playing into a scene built around samplers and sequencers.
Meeting Dean Fletcher, better known as Silver, led to Accidental Heroes. Their first serious collaboration, YouWithMeNow, attracted label interest, and records followed on Freeform, Virus Recordings, Metalheadz and Reinforced Records. The pair also established Space Recordings and Science Fiction Records, giving their own ideas somewhere to land.
Byrne later stepped away from regular D&B production to work in games. He created Lone Survivor and contributed music to Hotline Miami, developing another audience under his own name. The Sonic alias returned with a broader appetite: jungle remained central, but techno, footwork and the Los Angeles beat scene opened up new possibilities.
That return connected him with Dead Man’s Chest and Western Lore, while albums including Venus, Embers and Mirrors appear in his own Space catalogue. Byrne has described the recent Sonic music as strongly focused on jungle without the purism of his earlier years. For listeners coming from his soundtracks, it offers another way into the same musician’s imagination.
