Soultec Drum and Bass Artist Image

For Oxford producer and DJ soulTec, jazz records sit close to the roots of drum & bass. Speaking to Different Drumz in 2018, he traced his musical interests through jazz, soul, reggae, and dub, and singled out Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue as a lasting inspiration. LTJ Bukem's Atlantis (I Need You) first drew him towards jungle, while PFM's remix of JMJ & Richie's Free La Funk helped make him want to DJ.

That background feeds a production identity he places on the liquid side of the music. One particularly personal milestone was Good Looking releasing A Need In Me on vinyl and including it on Bukem In Session. He also recalled the significance of Bukem inviting him to play Fabric's second room after years spent attending the club as a raver.

His contribution extends to running a label. In September 2012, he started Sheer Velocity Recordings with Mark Halflite and Danny Fridd, opening with Furney's Charlotte's Song. soulTec handled the artwork, with the trio aiming for the flavour of Fabio's Swerve nights.

He subsequently established soulTec Music for his own productions on Bandcamp, retaining the connection to classic soul and jazz. Its catalogue includes Happy Feelings / Situations and All I Need / Effortless, with Halflite providing original artwork and mastering.
