Subject 13 is a London drum and bass project with a history connecting jazz, soul, and jungle. Its early recordings were made by Dave Stewart and Roy Bleau, whose work brought those influences into breakbeat production. The pair also established Vibe’z Recordings, creating an outlet alongside their releases for other labels.
Their first full-length album, The Black Steele Project, appeared through Crammed Discs’ Selector imprint. Its material included Slice Of Soul, High Noon, and Dinner Time Jazz, while the broader project reached beyond club records. During that period, Stewart and Bleau organised New Generation, an afternoon club event for under-18s that included drug-awareness sessions.
Later Subject 13 releases connect that history with R&S Records. One More Chance appeared in 2023, followed by Bad Thing and The Whole Truth. The Vibez catalogue also includes All We Need / E Voyager, placing the project back alongside its own label’s atmospheric jungle identity.
