They Live is the joint project of Consequence and Joe Seven, bringing together two producers associated with the experimental side of Exit Records and the Autonomic movement. Their 2011 album Cancel Standard was conceived as a complete listening experience, with its sequence of 12 tracks carrying as much importance as the individual pieces.
Consequence discussed the collaboration in a contemporary interview with Beat, explaining that he and Joe Seven had written the album under a shared name. He also described Autonomic as an approach to experimenting around tempo, rather than a fixed drum and bass formula.
Cancel Standard appeared on Exit in March 2011, following the Pure Palms / Don’t Know What to Say single on Autonomic. The pair presented the album as music to hear in order, allowing listeners to supply their own images.
