Behind the music

About Tyke.

Tyke is a London drum and bass producer with a taste for bass sounds that seem slightly wrong until they hit the right system. His releases on Grid Recordings and Playaz Recordings established a jump-up identity, with tracks such as Buzzards and Blessing becoming familiar reference points in his catalogue.

Working with DJ Hype and Pascal at Playaz gave that music a regular home, while the album Dream Catcher appeared in 2016. Tyke’s approach puts the bassline first without treating the rest of the track as an afterthought: the drums, arrangement and small changes in texture all help a strange sound find its groove.

His partnership with Recipe brought another perspective into the studio. On Mind Games, released in 2021 with Dakota Sixx, they built a vocal record that could reach listeners beyond the usual club circuit. Sixx recorded freely over the production, with input from Daddy Earl helping shape the arrangement.

He has also discussed being associated with the roller sound, although he seemed surprised by how firmly listeners placed him there. That overlap is useful when exploring his records: the jump-up foundation is clear, but it leaves room for sustained grooves and more song-led collaborations. The later Changes project continues the catalogue beyond those early Playaz releases.
