Was A Be is the Italian bass-music project that began with Fabio Forcella and Ivan DJing and promoting nights around Como and Milan. They started making their own tracks in 2014, drawing on a wider collection of music than the drum and bass they had first discovered.
The Jah EP reached TeeBee and Subtitles Music in 2015, after sitting on their computer for months. A bootleg of Friction and K-Tee’s Set It Off then opened the door to Shogun Audio, where the Blind EP followed. The title celebrated a friend’s return from travelling, rather than supplying a mysterious production concept.
Ivan left in 2018, and Fabio continued alone. In a later interview with Unchained Recordings, he spoke about having full control of the project, alongside the difficulty of having nobody to turn to when an idea stalled. The label’s Shaker EP brought him back towards his early approach, with footwork on The Walk and halftime on Weasel.
Other collaborations include Jitters with Dabs, who described the track’s old-school, junglistic drums in his own interview. Forcella now also presents music as Fabio FC. Was A Be remains the name attached to this earlier catalogue, with the newer identity giving listeners another project to explore.
