ASC is James Clements, a British producer whose music ranges from atmospheric drum and bass and jungle to ambient and techno. Now based in California, he has built a catalogue in which intricate drums and long, unfolding textures often share the same space.
A LTJ Bukem set in 1995 made a lasting impression. Clements has described hearing depth and emotion in drum and bass that he had not encountered before, an experience that helped set the direction of his own music. That fascination with atmosphere has stayed with him even as his records have moved between tempos.
His Auxiliary label gives that work a home, while Spatial concentrates on atmospheric breakbeat music. On the 2025 album Vanishing Point, the Amen edits of Invisible Borders, the drifting layers of Celestial Bodies, and the two-step movement of Paradigm Shift show several sides of that approach. The drums can be fierce without disturbing the music’s sense of space.
Clements also works with ambient music and film composition. He has explained that writing, arranging, and mixing happen together in his hardware-based studio, rather than as separate jobs at the end. That way of working suits music whose character depends on how each sound settles around the others.
