Behind the music
About Breakage.
Breakage is the production name of James Boyle, whose catalogue connects intricate jungle rhythms with dubstep, vocal music, and a continuing interest in bass and space. His early drum and bass work led to the debut album This Too Shall Pass on Bassbin in 2006, before Foundation widened that musical frame through Digital Soundboy.
Released in 2010, Foundation drew together several strands of his career rather than marking a simple departure from jungle. In an interview with ele-king, Boyle described it as a record containing his past, present, and possible future. His work around that period included Hard with Newham Generals and Fighting Fire with Jess Mills, bringing distinctive voices into music that travelled beyond drum and bass.
In 2017 he launched Index, sharing its name with a London club night he had already established. Talking to UKF, he explained that the night offered producers a place to test new music, while the label initially gave him a direct outlet for his own recordings. The opening tracks Elmhurst Dub and Anymore followed a return to jungle production that included Kill Dem and The Voyage EP.
At the Controls followed on Index in 2018, with six tracks written, produced, and mixed by Boyle, including Rudeboy Stuff and Settle. A second volume appeared in 2021. Together, these releases offer a route into his later drum and bass work alongside the broader bass-music explorations of Foundation.
