Desired State is the production partnership of Andy C and Ant Miles, formed before either name became inseparable from RAM Records. Their early records belong to the period when hardcore, hip-house, and increasingly intricate breakbeats were meeting on the same dancefloors.
Andy had been experimenting with a Commodore 64 when he linked up with Ant, a local friend with studio experience. Together they made Turn On, then released further hardcore material through labels including Karma, Dance Wax, Strategy, and Out of Romford during 1991 and 1992.
Those records also taught them how little control a new producer could have over a release. Andy later told DJ Mag that difficulties getting paid were part of the reason he wanted a label of his own. RAM began in 1992, giving that production partnership a home as its sound developed.
The Desired State catalogue includes Beyond Bass / Killer Beat and Goes Around / Here and Now. Andy and Ant also recorded as Origin Unknown and, with Shimon, as Ram Trilogy, but Desired State preserves an earlier chapter: two producers learning how to make and release the music they wanted to hear.
