Behind the music
About Flite.
Flite is the former recording name of American drum and bass producer Justin Hawkes. His musical upbringing included instruments, video-game soundtracks, and early experiments with MIDI software. Composers such as Koji Kondo and Joe Hisaishi mattered to him before drum and bass became the main focus of his production.
Music from Pendulum, Netsky, and Noisia helped open that door. Releases through Liquicity brought his own tracks to an international audience, while records on Hospital Records, UKF, and Monstercat showed his appetite for different settings. His Flite catalogue moves between liquid, melody-led club tracks, and more aggressive material.
Releases such as The Cure EP and Calm Before The Storm capture different stages of that work. Away from finished records, streaming studio sessions allowed him to share the process, hear feedback, and build a community around the music. In a 2017 interview, he described that relationship with listeners as an important part of becoming a full-time producer.
He began releasing under Justin Hawkes in 2021, later issuing the album Existential. The name change marked a new chapter rather than a different musician. For anyone discovering the older tracks, Flite remains the route into the catalogue that preceded it, with the same interest in musical detail and emotional contrast already taking shape.
