J Majik & Wickaman brought together two producers with different instincts in the studio. J Majik’s earlier work had moved through the darker and more atmospheric sides of drum and bass, while Wickaman brought an appetite for jump-up. Their partnership developed through combining those approaches rather than following one producer’s sound unchanged.
Recalling the collaboration in an Untitled909 interview, J Majik placed their meeting around 2005 and described how the contrast gave their sessions energy. Wickaman also helped him adjust to a newer way of working on computers. It was a practical studio partnership as well as a shared artist name.
Crazy World became one of their best-known joint releases, appearing through Data in 2008. Its vocal-led approach took their music beyond the underground labels associated with J Majik’s earlier career. The pair’s catalogue nevertheless continued to include records made for the drum and bass circuit, rather than moving entirely into crossover singles.
The Metalheadz release Ritual / Old Headz shows another side of their work together, with both tracks credited to the partnership. Their connection also ran through Infrared Records, the imprint J Majik had established before they began collaborating. His later reflections on those sessions put their differences at the centre of what worked: darker ideas meeting Wickaman’s jump-up instincts, with each changing the other’s approach.
