Mystic Pulse is a Rotterdam producer who brings his love of reggae and dub into jungle. Records such as Herbalist, Live Up, and Wha Do Dem with Daddy Freddy grew from that overlap, with his studio work taking in both sounds rather than treating reggae as something to sample and leave behind.
He began mixing as a teenager, then made beats for a hip-hop group. Working in a music shop helped him build a studio, and studying audio engineering gave him the chance to record a reggae band. Making dub versions of those recordings pulled him further into the music, eventually leading to the Mystic Pulse project.
His early connection with Rasta Vibez came through Marco at Triple Vision. Herbalist initially appeared as an uncredited bootleg on ten-inch vinyl; Live Up and Selecta followed under his own name. That relationship gave his reggae-influenced jungle a home while he continued developing the dub side of his production.
For all the ragga-jungle associations, he has been clear that the name covers more than one style. In a 2018 interview, he described his work as a combination of dub, reggae, and jungle. The common ground is his interest in bass, rhythm, and the possibilities of the studio.
