Phace is the recording project of Florian Harres, a Hamburg-based producer, DJ, and label owner. It began as a partnership with Nicolas, and their shared history runs through the project’s early drum and bass recordings. In a later conversation with Rockwell, Harres explained that Nicolas was already moving away from Phace around the making of Psycho, although his contribution remained part of its musical identity. Harres subsequently continued under the same name as a solo producer.
The partnership with Misanthrop brought another form of collaboration. For their album From Deep Space, the producers found that their separate work was heading in a similar direction and decided to combine it. Released through their own Neosignal, it followed a studio process divided between different cities. Harres’s account emphasised the importance of a shared mood and an understanding of what each person was doing, rather than a rigid division of tasks.
His solo album Shape the Random followed in March 2015. Across 14 tracks, Harres wrote and produced the record, with Mefjus joining him on The Mothership. Later collaborations continued to explore different rhythms: Nervenkitzel with Mefjus and Unsafe with Apashe are examples of his work in halftime alongside the neurofunk associated with earlier Phace recordings.
The later album EVERYDAY was released through Deadbeats in 2024. Neosignal and Nëu Music also remain part of Harres’s label work. The studio partnerships, solo albums, and releases outside his own imprints give the Phace catalogue several distinct settings for his production.
