Randall was a jungle and drum and bass DJ and producer whose influence reached many of the people who went on to shape the music. Born Randall McNeil, he grew up in East London and became involved in the acid-house and pirate-radio scene before jungle took hold. His records and mixing made him an early point of reference for younger DJs.
At AWOL and other London nights, he developed an approach to selecting and combining tunes that Andy C and Friction later cited as an inspiration. His shop work at De Underground also kept him close to producers and new releases. The music was being shared across counters, radio shows, and dancefloors at the same time.
His own production included Sound Control, made with Andy C and released through RAM Records in 1994. Recalling the session to UKF, Randall explained how its hook came together around a time-stretched Amen break. It was an example of the experimentation possible while the sound was still developing, rather than a formula worked out in advance.
He also ran Mac2 Recordings, supporting established producers and newer artists. Randall died on 31 July 2024, aged 54; his representatives confirmed the news to music publications. His legacy includes that label and his studio work, but it is inseparable from the generations of DJs and ravers who first encountered jungle through his sets.
