Behind the music
About Top Cat.
Top Cat is a reggae and jungle MC and vocalist whose work connects sound-system traditions with electronic bass music. His recording identity is built around voice, lyrics, and collaborations, alongside the label work that has helped provide a home for those records. He belongs to the history of jungle, while his role remains different from that of a producer creating the instrumental backing.
His Nine Lives label began in 1994, with support from figures including Tenor Fly. The imprint became a setting for his own releases and collaborations, linking the independence of running a label with the practical work of recording and reaching an audience. The Cat and Nine Lives names recur through his catalogue and the artist-controlled Cato9 Music archive.
Cat Inna Jungle brought that vocal identity into a 2013 album involving producers including Benny Page, Marcus Visionary, and Aries. The credits matter to the music’s history: Top Cat’s presence connects the tracks, while the different collaborators bring their own production approaches. It is a useful introduction for listeners coming from drum and bass who want to explore how his voice works across different rhythms.
His partnership with Tenor Fly became known as Two Veterans, taking its name from their 2006 album together. The later Legends followed in 2019 after Tenor Fly’s death, preserving another part of that shared recording history. Those releases sit alongside Top Cat’s wider reggae and jungle work, connecting the energy of sound-system sparring with music made for records and live performance.
