Utah Jazz is the production name of Luke Wilson, a British drum and bass artist whose music is closely associated with liquid funk. Soul, jazz, and older dance records provide a substantial part of the source material, with sampling and melodic detail at the centre of his approach.
The name dates back to the 1990s, when Wilson wanted an alias that included the word jazz. In an interview with HK Magazine, he explained that it was a musical choice rather than a statement of allegiance to the basketball team. The story fits a producer whose identity grew from the records he listened to and collected.
Discussing his inspirations with DJ Mag in 2013, Wilson described searching across different periods for samples and musical ideas. That conversation accompanied his third album, Groove Therapy, and also touched on the collaborative Everything Is Everything with Alex Reece. The breadth of those influences gives the music its character without requiring every record to follow the same formula.
The subsequent Portfolio appeared through Spearhead Records in 2014. His own catalogue also documents earlier album work and records for Liquid V. Taken together, the releases offer listeners a route through soulful drum and bass built from carefully chosen sounds, with the albums allowing those ideas more room than a single dancefloor track.
