Monty is a UK-born producer and DJ based in Toulouse, with a catalogue that moves between drum and bass, dubstep, and other bass-music tempos. His long association with Alix Perez’s 1985 Music includes the album Hit The Lights and the No Sunset For Soul EP.
Dub and reggae are important influences, but so is playing instruments. He and fellow Toulouse producer Trail both play guitar and bass, and their studio sessions often draw on that shared interest. On Argentique, the title also reflects their enthusiasm for analogue photography.
The harder records can have equally unexpected beginnings. The bass in Gas Tank started with a didgeridoo sample, pitched and processed into the sound that drives the track. No Sunset For Soul paired him with singer Liam Bailey, whose music he had been listening to before he began producing himself.
The EP puts drum and bass beside 140 productions rather than keeping them in separate projects. His DJ approach is similarly open, responding to the room and moving between styles. He has spoken about including garage and halftime, too, and about wanting listeners to hear him as more than a drum and bass artist.
