About BCee.
BCee is Steve Jefroy, a drum and bass producer based in Norfolk and the founder of Spearhead Records. His work gives vocals and songwriting a central role, with personal experiences often providing the starting point for a track.
An early chapter came through his partnership with Kubiks. They launched Rubik in 2001, before BCee developed Spearhead as a home for his own music and other producers. The label reached its 20th anniversary in 2025.
His collaboration with Charlotte Haining led to the 2020 album Life as We Know It. Rather than simply adding a vocal to a finished instrumental, the writing could begin with BCee describing something he was going through, which Haining would help turn into a song.
That process made room for difficult experiences as well as positive ones. In their interview about the album, they discussed life and loss as material for the lyrics, allowing the songs to carry a more specific meaning than a general dancefloor vocal.
Running Spearhead also means making decisions beyond his own records. In his 2025 anniversary interview, BCee described choosing to scale back the business rather than sign music purely for its streaming potential. Keeping the label focused on records he wanted to release took priority over expanding the operation.
