Charlotte Haining is a British singer and songwriter whose voice has become familiar across drum and bass. Her work with BCee is an especially personal part of that catalogue, with their album Life As We Know It built around experiences they both wanted to put into songs.
The partnership began after BCee heard her at Liquicity and found her cover of Major Lazer’s Lean On. He sent her a track for The Vanguard Project, his collaboration with Villem, and further recordings followed. Time together at Sun and Bass eventually led them to discuss a larger project.
Their writing method was unusually open. BCee sent thoughts, memories, and scraps of lyrics; Charlotte shaped them into stories, often recognising something of her own life in them. On other songs, a piano idea was enough to suggest the words. Almost There came from the uncertainty she felt while trying to build a singing and songwriting career in London.
What started as an EP grew into an album during lockdown, with Etherwood and DRS among its guests. Its liquid drum and bass setting gives those songs a home, but Charlotte’s contribution is the writing and singing at their heart: music about loss, mental health, and finding a way forward.
