Behind the music
About Hybrid Minds.
Hybrid Minds make liquid drum and bass around songs, with vocals and melodies given as much room as the breaks underneath them. The British production duo of Josh White and Matt Lowe began as a side project after they met through internet radio. Both were playing heavier music in clubs, but the softer records they listened to at home gave them a different starting point when they began working together.
Their debut album, Mountains, was followed by Elements in 2017. By then, they had moved away from building tracks around samples towards writing their own music and working closely with singers. Talking to UKF, they described spending months arranging the album so it would play as a complete record. Some of its quieter details came from a recorder Josh carried around: the London Underground, birds outside the studio, and other everyday sounds found their way into the tracks.
Vocals became increasingly central to that process. Early collaborator Grimm helped shape their material, while later releases brought in singers including Catching Cairo and Charlotte Haining. Their album Tides, released on Hybrid Music in March 2024, included If Love Could Have Saved You with venbee and Lights with Charlotte Plank.
Their fourth album, Atmosphere, followed in October 2025. Its guests included Songer on Under The Water, and Master Peace and Emba on Alive Again.
