Jubei is the recording name of Paul Ager, a British drum and bass producer whose musical education began with techno and house before jungle took hold. In a DJ Mag interview, he recalled visiting Bristol’s Lakota to hear Dave Angel, then finding himself drawn to the drum and bass room upstairs. That experience changed the records he bought and the nights he sought out.
His relationship with Metalheadz developed from a listener’s attachment to its catalogue into a recording partnership. He signed to the label in 2010, and his debut album, To Have & Have Not, brought together instrumental productions, vocal performances, and collaborations with Goldie, dBridge, and Marcus Intalex.
Those collaborations grew out of personal connections rather than a predetermined guest list. Jubei told DJ Mag that the Marcus Intalex session began with an invitation to arrive early for a Manchester booking; the resulting track was finished back in his own studio. His engineering work also extended to Goldie’s orchestral project Sine Tempus.
His own Carbon Music provides another outlet for original work. The 2021 Reform EP paired solo tracks Slipstream and Running Scared with Component, made alongside Submotive. Its compact three-track format sits beside the broader album work in his catalogue.
