Marcus Visionary is a Toronto producer and DJ whose jungle connects reggae vocals with the breakbeats he first fell in love with as a record collector. His career includes the Visionary partnership, solo records, and Inner City Dance, the label he runs with DJ Lush.
He and Dave Whalen began producing together in 1995 after getting hold of an Akai sampler. Both learned as they went, with Dave bringing technical and musical knowledge to the partnership. When Dave stepped back to focus on family, Marcus continued under the name listeners now know.
Bailey helped circulate their music, with No. 9 Dub reaching Marcus Intalex and Gimme Your Love reaching Shy FX. The resulting releases on Revolvr and Digital Soundboy helped take the Toronto sound beyond its local audience.
Meeting Liondub opened another chapter. Their interest in working with reggae singers led to the album Humble on Liondub International and later collaborations as Rumble. Marcus has also returned to slower jungle tempos, explaining in a 2023 interview that they give older breaks more room. His Unifying Force and Carnival Express releases continue a catalogue that has never separated affection for the original rave sound from making new music.
