Pendulum are a drum and bass and rock band from Perth, Australia, formed in 2002 by Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen, and Paul 'El Hornet' Harding. Their live line-up also includes guitarist Peredur ap Gwynedd and drummer Kevin 'KJ' Sawka, who joined in 2006 and 2009 respectively.
The group's format brings a producer-led studio project together with a performing band. Swire provides vocals and synths as well as production, while McGrillen's roles include bass and backing vocals. Harding has continued to represent Pendulum through DJ performances, alongside the band's live shows. This distinction helps explain why a Pendulum DJ set and a full-band concert offer different versions of the project.
Their debut album, Hold Your Colour, was released in 2005. It was followed by In Silico in 2008 and Immersion in 2010, the latter reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart.
Their later studio work has continued to develop from that flexible setup. According to the band's account, work on Inertia began taking shape in 2020, with the two intervening EPs helping establish its direction. The album's collaborations bring rock vocalists and electronic producers into the same project, extending an approach already present in the band's earlier records.
The Elemental and Anima EPs, released in 2021 and 2023, preceded Inertia in 2025. Produced by Swire and Owen Charles at the band's London studio, Inertia features collaborations with artists from both electronic music and rock, continuing the band's combination of programmed production and live instrumentation.
