Dan Dakota is a British-born drum and bass producer who moved to Calgary as a child. His music first reached a wider audience through Liquicity, where Telecaster helped introduce his work. The track introduced a melodic producer who would take time to work out what he wanted to make next.
Rather than following it immediately with similar material, he spent a couple of years refining his production. In a UKF interview, he described becoming more particular about sound design and the space between elements. Making liquid remained part of his work, but he was also drawn towards halftime rhythms and less crowded arrangements.
Stood In The Dark / We Let Em Go arrived in 2016, giving listeners a clearer picture of that development. The break between releases was a period of writing and experimentation, with the aim of making music he could feel confident putting out. His interest in different tempos also gave him ways to step away from an idea and return to it with fresh ears.
Calgary's drum and bass community was another part of that story. Meeting visiting producers and hearing music in clubs connected his home studio to a wider scene. His Liquicity recordings remain useful introductions, particularly for listeners who enjoy melodic drum and bass and want to follow a producer's gradual movement towards a more pared-back sound.
