Behind the music

About David Boomah.

David Boomah is a reggae and jungle vocalist whose songwriting grew out of soundsystem culture in Jamaica. Born in Birmingham, he moved to Jamaica at nine and began singing on Small Axe, the local sound where his uncle Greybeard worked as a selecta and singer.

He returned to the UK at 19, bringing that dancehall experience into a new musical setting. Who Run Tings, his 1995 collaboration with Shy FX, became a key part of his jungle story. Boomah later recalled that many listeners thought the vocal was a sample, leaving them familiar with the record long before they knew who had sung it.

His debut album, One World Many Cultures, appeared through V Recordings in 2013. Bryan Gee helped him develop the project in stages, working on track choices and collaborations rather than rushing the record. Boomah wanted an album that could move between genres and show more than one side of his voice.

His work with Unit 137 includes No Have No Heart and Anansi with Nãnci Correia. Across reggae and drum and bass, he has kept the message in the lyric central to the song.
