Memtrix is the drum and bass project of Oscar Rawlinson, a producer whose route into electronic music began with a guitar. He wanted to record his own playing, borrowed software from friends, and became more interested in the unfamiliar sounds he could make on a computer. In a UKF interview, he traced that background to his enthusiasm for metal and rock, describing production as his main interest and DJing as something that followed from it.
Lifted Music helped turn those experiments into a recording career after hearing music he had uploaded while still a teenager. His early work explored harder drum and bass, but the Voodoo EP brought guitar playing and singing into the same project. Rawlinson explained that the record was the first collection in which he had connected those wider musical influences with the energetic drum and bass he wanted to make. Its title track returned directly to his guitar-writing roots.
A collaboration with Spor extended that approach. Darkest Hours and Super Trace appeared through Lifted and Sotto Voce, joining the two producers on a release that Rawlinson described as more melodic than listeners might have expected. Their subsequent joint interview discussed songwriting alongside the practical discipline of keeping computer projects manageable. For Memtrix, reducing unnecessary processing was a way of keeping ideas moving, with vocals and guitar increasingly taking their place alongside electronic sound design.
