Mtwn are Belgian brothers Dimitri and Max Mathieu, whose drum and bass work developed into a broader exploration of electronic music. Their catalogue includes Embers EP and Collisions EP, alongside two albums made with Fearful: Exordium in 2021 and Beyond the Veil in 2023.
The partnership grew from an interest in sounds outside drum and bass. Modular synthesis became central to their exchange of ideas, with the brothers creating material that Fearful could develop into arrangements. Writing during lockdown encouraged the slower, more exploratory approach of Exordium. Its successor took that shared vocabulary towards a more confrontational club setting, with Riko Dan joining them on Careful.
In a 2023 interview with Rendah Mag, Max described the freedom of working beyond expectations attached to a particular genre. Dimitri spoke about the value of making sounds and ideas without forcing each session to become a finished track. That division of labour remained flexible: material passed between the three producers, sometimes being rebuilt repeatedly before it found its final form. Fearful later recalled that Mutual Destruction went through four substantially different versions during the making of Beyond the Veil.
