MUZZ is British producer Muzzy Obaidi, formerly known as Muzzy. Drum and bass sits at the centre of his catalogue, but rock, metal, film scores, and video-game music have been just as important to the sound. Big riffs and electronic production developed together rather than arriving as separate phases.
As a schoolboy, he watched friends playing in bands and tried making electronic versions of the metal he loved. Hearing Pendulum’s Slam in the game MotorStorm showed him how those interests could meet. His first Monstercat single, Riding the Storm, followed in November 2011.
His 2020 debut album The Promised Land gave him room to expand beyond drum and bass. The music and accompanying artwork explored nature and technology, with vocal collaborators including Koven, PAV4N, and Miss Trouble helping develop its different moods.
Gaming has brought the music to another audience. Horsepower, originally a demo for The Cascade EP, became a Rocket League title track after Monstercat heard the finished version. MUZZ has also had music featured in Fortnite, Roblox, and Beat Saber, although he has explained that those tracks were not all written specifically for the games.
