Polaris brings a lifelong musical background to drum and bass. Born in Bucharest and raised there before moving to Canada, he started piano lessons as a child, with a violinist father and music all around him. Bands and trance production came before a first rave in 2009 introduced him to D&B.
His Toronto-based work balances soothing, atmospheric passages with heavier energy. Releases on Hospital Records and Med School helped take that sound further, with Blue Sky Thinking, Empire and Love Letter among the solo records. Collaborations with Schematic, Keeno and Makoto extend the musical connections around the catalogue.
In 2024 he launched Highland Recordings, giving himself somewhere to release tracks that did not easily fit another label’s sound or schedule. Keep Pushin’, made with DRS and Valiant Emcee, brought the idea into focus. The label’s name comes from an Ontario motorcycle route he loves, another personal connection carried into the music.
His Outer Reaches mixes with Valiant Emcee explore atmospheric and liquid D&B alongside futurist jungle and occasional slower breaks. Inspired by LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad, they favour a sustained listening experience across different eras. That interest in atmosphere connects the DJ selections to Polaris’s own writing, without requiring every record to sit in the same stylistic box.
