Behind the music
About Sub Zero.
Sub Zero is Jake Carter, a drum and bass producer whose recording career began as one half of Generation Dub. Growing up in Newcastle, he met his production partner at college and concentrated on making music after leaving their course. The records they made together later became part of the Playaz Recordings catalogue.
The G-Dub partnership connected him with DJ Hype and Pascal before he developed the Sub Zero solo project. Spin Doc / Fever, released through Ganja in 2009, marked that new phase. Playaz’s own account of his career identifies jump-up as an established part of both the earlier duo work and his solo production.
Collaboration continued to be important after the move to a separate name. The 2016 The Collab EP brought in Majistrate on Weapon Of Choice, Jaydan on Fear, and DJ Limited on How To Act. The last of those was explicitly presented by the label as a jump-up record.
The same EP included Oh Girl, made with Dub Motion, which took a more soulful, vocal-led rolling direction. That difference is useful when exploring Sub Zero beyond the records most closely associated with his name. His catalogue has a clear jump-up foundation, but an individual collaboration can take the music somewhere else without requiring a change of artist name.
