Grey Code is Spencer Warren, a drum and bass producer whose interest in melody sits alongside intricate rhythms and careful sound design. Early releases through Dispatch Recordings led to Metalheadz, where Reprieve, Helios, and his debut album Renewal gave those ideas more space.
He grew up in Lewes, near Brighton, in a musical family, then became involved in Bristol’s scene while at university. Releases on Demand and Principle appeared alongside his Dispatch work in 2017, with Traces and Reverie helping establish the Grey Code name before his first Metalheadz EP.
Renewal arrived in January 2022. Its title came from a conversation with an old friend about the possibilities of life after lockdown. Warren wanted the album to move between moods and tempos while remaining connected, using ambient passages to change the listener’s sense of time rather than simply stacking up club tracks.
He also found ways to make digital production feel less rigid. Speaking to DJ Mag, he explained that the album’s analogue-sounding synths came from software, played on a keyboard with a light touch on quantisation. That combination of precision and small human variations helps explain why his minimal arrangements still leave so much room for feeling.
