Behind the music
About MC Spyda.
MC Spyda, also known as Black Tarantula, is a Nottingham MC whose roots are in dancehall and UK sound systems. His reggae-influenced delivery carried into drum and bass through recorded collaborations as well as live performances.
His voice reached a wider audience on Tarantula (Original Mix) with Pendulum, following earlier work with Bad Company UK and the Rawhill Crew. The vocal became a lasting part of his recorded identity, but his catalogue has continued to grow through partnerships with other producers. As part of Basslayerz, he also works alongside Slipz and fellow MC Blu Bomma.
Rise Again, made with AKAS and released in 2023, came from the frustration of being unable to perform during lockdown. The pair discussed that background in an interview with 1 More Thing, giving the jump-up single a more personal context than its dancefloor setting might suggest. In 2024, Spyda also appeared with Teddy Killerz on Hardcore Riddim, released by Monstercat.
