Nu:Tone is Dan Gresham, a drum and bass producer from Cambridge. His music draws on jazz, rare groove, and older soundtrack recordings, with an interest in the character of acoustic instruments as well as the possibilities of electronic production.
His album catalogue on Hospital Records includes Brave Nu World from 2005 and Future History from 2014. Alongside his solo work, he records with his brother Logistics as Nu:Logic, giving the pair a separate home for their shared productions.
Little Spaces, released in February 2021, returned to the solo album format. Gresham had chosen its title before the pandemic, thinking about the intimate DJ booths and listening environments where he felt a close connection with music.
The album included Charlotte Haining on Sleepwalker. Its emphasis on smaller spaces did not mean abandoning club playback: Gresham discussed wanting the music to work at different volumes and in different settings.
In the studio, he has described combining recorded instrument sounds to create new colours. Layering a celeste with a harp was one example, using familiar acoustic sources to arrive at a texture that neither instrument supplied alone.
